On April 13, 2020, Snow wrote `pinning to the top so we dont lose our pics` in Slice of Life. This is the earliest currently surfaced direct preservation wording in the recovered Slice handoff.
THE ARCHIVE
BEFORE THE
ARCHIVE
UL kept inventing reasons not to let the present disappear. Then people started importing the past too.
There was no archive department in 2020.
There were different rooms solving different problems. Slice did not want the faces to vanish into the scroll. Louvre wanted member-made work to remain findable. HR kept material because a future promotion question might need it. A conduct draft treated chat as a record whose integrity mattered. The Wall kept the line that sounded too much like the person who said it. An old leadership room eventually became something to reread before turning out the lights.
The useful question is therefore not when did UL decide to archive itself? It is which verbs kept leaving the future something to work with?
DON'T LOSE
OUR PICS.
April 13, 2020. Slice has been open for hours. Snow says exactly what the pin is for:“pinning to the top so we dont lose our pics.”
Five days later the same verb is loose in Louvre. After a run of pin events Snow explains,“oh I just pinned all the stuff people posted.” Faces in one room. Member-made work in another. No archive department. The scroll still does not get final custody.

Exact Slice message 699356502070263897, authored by Snow at 13:33 PDT. This is the earliest currently surfaced direct preservation wording in the Slice handoff, not proof that UL's broader preservation instinct originated here.
source details
Exact surviving Snow line after a burst of pin events. This proves selective preservation behavior in Louvre; it does not prove a centralized archive policy existed in April 2020.
Then the camera roll starts moving backward.
OLD PIC.
PUT IT IN THE ROOM.
Gilli gets distracted by “old pics.” Anthos finds “old photos i took” of gardens in Suzhou. Mugs files an “Old pic” of herself lying dead after work. Tae digs up an old picture because she looks funny in it.
This is a different memory verb. Pinning says do not lose what we are sharing now. These posts reach backward and deliberately bring earlier personal material into the shared room. Slice is not only retaining the present anymore. The camera roll has started supplying prequels.

Four exact 2020–2021 Slice messages from the verified continuation index: Gilli 710494738192662559, Anthos 766771513189597244, Mugen 857863650580627487, and Tae 897279639213457419. Each author explicitly frames the material as old photos / an old pic. The Discord dates own posting chronology; they do not date the underlying photographs. Anthos explicitly says `i took` her Suzhou garden photos, which supports her own capture claim for that referenced set; no unseen attachment, subject, or location beyond the authored wording is inferred here.
JUNE 16 2020 · MUGEN'S TEAROOM
FOR FUTURE QUESTIONS
OF PROMOTION.
Snow has made a new HR folder. The reason is already pointed forward: “to hold this in for future questions of promotion.” This is not memory as nostalgia. It is memory as somebody later asking why did we do that?and the house deciding the answer should still exist.
source details
Exact Discord message 722451846613958728 from the COMPLETE Early Safe House clearance-room intake. Snow describes a new HR folder whose purpose is future recall during promotion questions. This is evidence of administrative memory infrastructure, not proof that UL had a centralized archive department or that this was the first folder ever made.
THE CHAT ITSELF
COUNTS AS A RECORD.
August 2020. JAG gives the idea a completely different job. Charge 8 calls Discord Chat, World Chat, and Club Chatpublic records and prohibits intentionally altering, concealing, removing, or destroying them.
This is conduct language, not historical preservation. The overlap is still useful: by August, UL can talk about chat as something whose integrity survives the moment that produced it.
source details
Selected lines from separate charge-draft messages on August 7. History leads with Charge 8 because Snow explicitly parenthesizes `Discord Chat, World Chat, Club Chat` as `public record` inside the mock-code. That is evidence of record-conscious language in JAG, not proof of a formal 2020 archival program, a retention policy, actual enforcement, or the origin of the later UL archive project. No screenshot or image attachment is being implied.
Then the record stops being neutral.
NO, THIS LINE.
KEEP THIS ONE.
The earliest recovered Wall receipts sharpen what the room was doing. On August 24, Ren says,“I don’t have other people’s quotes for nothing.” The next day she says she had thought of the room as ahall of fame; “wall of shame” works too.
Fame and shame are already sitting on the same shelf. The Wall is not useful to memory because it preserves everything. It is useful because people select one line, one screenshot, one person-specific fragment and make the selection social.
source details
This is not paraphrase. Ren literally says why she keeps the quotes.
“MAKE A CHANNEL JUST FOR MY QUOTES WHY DONTCHA”
By March 2021, being selected has become recognizable from inside the scene. Baby Lyssa does not need a methodology paragraph. The complaint names the mechanism: people are keeping enough of her lines that curation itself has become a recurring interaction.
OCTOBER 10 2021 · BOSSES OFFICE
“Rereading this room lol”
SO MANY
CHARACTER ARCS.
Mugen is about to decommission the old room. In the same pass she remembers “UL's first vc 😭”. The room is no longer only where leadership happened. It has become a thing she can walk back through and recognize as history while deciding it is time to close it.

Mugen is rereading an old leadership room while preparing to decommission it. `So many character arcs` is retrospective room-memory language; it does not make every old channel a formal archive or establish the room as the origin of UL historical self-consciousness.
THE SAVED THING
COMES BACK WITH A FONT.
By 2023, the traffic can run back out of the Wall. Mia says a line should be on a poster. Mugen immediately answers,“LMFAOO SAID THE POSTER MAKER.”
Storage is not the endpoint. Selected UL material becomes reusable UL material: quote to Wall, Wall to design idea, old artifact to later self-description. The formal archive arrives much later to discover the house has been leaving itself handles for years.
source details
Cross-room reputation receipt from the recovered Wall export. Mia's informal poster-maker reputation is not the formal UL Media Director title; that belongs to Han.
SO WHEN DID THE ARCHIVE START?
It did not start once.
Pinning, back-catalog import, filing for later decisions, record integrity, quote keeping, deliberate rereading, and creative reuse were different behaviors with different immediate purposes. Together they left UL with a past that could keep re-entering the present. The formal archive arrived later and inherited those habits.
Five days later, on April 18, 2020, Snow wrote `oh I just pinned all the stuff people posted` after a run of Louvre pin events, showing the same findability reflex around member-made creative work.
From May 2020 through October 2021, Gilli, Anthos, Mugen, and Tae each explicitly resurfaced older personal photos in Slice: `old pics`, `old photos i took`, `Old pic`, and `this an old pic`. Slice was therefore not only keeping the present from disappearing; members were also importing earlier personal material into the shared room.
On June 16, 2020, Snow wrote `btw made new HR folder to hold this in for future questions of promotion`. The Safe House intake therefore preserves a second memory behavior: filing material because a later decision may need to revisit it.
On August 7, 2020, Snow's JAG Charge 8 calls Discord Chat, World Chat, and Club Chat public records and prohibits intentional alteration, concealment, removal, or destruction of those records.
On August 24, 2020, Ren says she does not keep other people's quotes for nothing. The next day she says she had thought of the Wall as a hall of fame, while accepting wall of shame as the name.
On March 24, 2021, Baby Lyssa responds to the room's quote-saving behavior with `MAKE A CHANNEL JUST FOR MY QUOTES WHY DONTCHA`, showing that being curated had itself become legible to the subject.
On October 10, 2021, while preparing to decommission the old Bosses Office, Mugen writes `Rereading this room lol`, remembers `UL's first vc 😭`, and lands on `So many character arcs`. An old room has become something members can deliberately reread as their own history.
By April 2023, a Wall line can immediately become proposed poster material: Mia says something should be on a poster and Mugen answers `LMFAOO SAID THE POSTER MAKER`.
UL did not operate one documented master archive plan. The supported synthesis is that several independent habits—pinning current material, importing older personal media, filing material for later decisions, protecting records, selecting quotes, rereading old rooms, and later remaking old material—made the community unusually reusable to its own future memory.
