YOU'RE GROUNDED.
NOT ARRESTED.
UL somehow needed two punishment systems: one for actual moderation and one for when Gilli decided you had committed a household crime.
Grounded looks disciplinary until somebody finally explains it. Then the architecture becomes beautifully stupid: Arrested is for actual punishment / serious situations. Grounded is playtime. Same criminal vocabulary, radically different stakes.
FIRST, EVERYBODY JUST STARTS PARENTING EACH OTHER.
Rooks tells two people, You both are grounded. A couple weeks later Ren reports Gilli grounded me XD. There is no courtroom speech. Nobody pauses to define jurisdiction. The joke works because the word already carries the whole domestic posture: you have disappointed an imaginary parent and apparently lost imaginary privileges.
THEN THE JOKE BECOMES VISIBLE ENOUGH TO ARGUE WITH.
A bot interaction renders UncleRoach(Grounded). Ricochet's response is immediate: HEY WHO TF GROUNDED ME. That little who is the useful part. Grounded is no longer only a sentence people throw at each other; it has become a state somebody can notice, resent, and demand provenance for.
The exact implementation is still unresolved. The archive will not pretend a visible label tells us whether Discord, a bot, a nickname edit, or multiple pieces were doing the technical work.
GROUNDED = PLAYTIME
REN SAVES THE ARCHIVE FROM MAKING THIS MUCH MORE SERIOUS THAN IT WAS.
Akariel asks for the grounded role, and Ren draws the boundary plainly. Arrested is for actual punishment / serious situations and can lock someone out of the server. Grounded is the playtime version.
That sentence is the firewall. The two systems may share crime-and-punishment language, but they are not interchangeable. One belongs to actual moderation. The other is the house putting you in imaginary time-out because you have displeased the furniture.
OF COURSE GILLI ATTACHES IT TO HYDRATION.
The Drink Water / Eat Food Reminder routine already has its own escalation grammar. Gilli adds the obvious next enforcement tier: stop what you're doing, get hydrated, eat, OR YOU'RE GROUNDED!
It is parental language stapled to care. The threat is ridiculous precisely because the underlying request is mundane and affectionate: please drink water and feed yourself, or Mother Discord is revoking your Xbox.
THE -USSY CASE REACHES APPEALS.
Gilli issues a Grounded sentence for using ussy. The room immediately behaves as though a reversible conviction has entered the docket. An appeal gets routed toward Ansun; Ren starts yelling UNGROUND INNOCENT, then turns the defense into doctrine: NO SHAMING ANY USSY and finally WE PROUSSY.
Nothing in this scene becomes real governance. That is exactly the joke's mature form: a playtime punishment has acquired enough shared grammar that people can perform sentencing, objection, appeal, pardon, and constitutional crisis without anybody confusing it for the actual moderation tools sitting elsewhere in the same server.
THE SERVER KNEW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DISCIPLINE AND PLAY.
The word Grounded borrows authority, but the surviving archive explicitly strips away the stakes. It is the fake-parent version of punishment: socially legible, reversible, useful for a hydration threat or a cursed suffix hearing, and funny because everybody can recognize the performance.
Arrested and Judgement belong to actual moderation history. Grounded does not get promoted into that history just because UL insisted on giving a joke enough interface to file an appeal.
source boundary
Earliest surviving is not origin. October 2020 is the earliest Grounded wording in this reviewed Core recovery package, not a proven creation date. The exact technical implementation of the visible Grounded state remains unresolved. Ren's June 29, 2021 distinction is the key surviving functional receipt: Arrested is actual punishment / serious; Grounded is playtime. Do not merge Grounded with Arrested, Jail, Judgement, or any formal office. The March 2022 appeals language is social theater, not literal legal procedure.
