Dean was Mugen's son before UL existed, which is both important and somehow not even the most Dean thing about him.
He came into Dragon Raja with an older online-family circle already behind him — Mugen, Key, Zepp, Kal, New, GenGrey — and UL simply became the next house that relationship learned to live in. By 2020 the Tumbleweed map is filing Dean under Mugs. By 2021 he can ask "Don't you agree mum" in the middle of a pizza-man joke without anybody needing an explanatory footnote. In 2023 his visible server name is still "Dean (Mug's son)". The label lasts because the relationship lasts, but the relationship itself is much more alive than the label: Mugen can see a tree-fall GIF, immediately go "climbing trees again son, get me coconut", and Dean's response is not confusion but "Yeeee tryna get coconut". Apparently being somebody's online son eventually comes with produce retrieval duties.
He changes volume to fit the room
Dean is difficult to flatten because he does not use one social volume everywhere.
When asked in 2024 whether he is introverted or extroverted, he describes himself almost like a conversational counterweight. Put him around extroverts and he becomes the quieter listener because he genuinely enjoys hearing them "yapping non-stop". Put him around introverts and he becomes the extroverted one and starts yapping himself. When he wants to make a new friend, he says he is usually more inclined to approach the introverts — and, once they get comfortable, he notices they often become the yappers too.
That makes an older Mugen description land differently. When she is sorting people into the ones who would hype her up versus tell her she is making a bad decision, Dean refuses to stay in one box there too. He can support her and call her out. The delivery can be "nicely serious or screaming and sweet".
Those two descriptions come from opposite sides of the relationship — Dean explaining himself, Mugen explaining how he feels to be around — and they match in the interesting place. His style changes with what the moment needs. Quiet is not absence. Loud is not lack of seriousness. Sweetness does not stop him from saying *that is a bad idea*. He can listen, yap, cheer, get serious, or scream affectionately, and none of those modes cancels the others.
That also explains why the old "Support Tech" display name is such a funny accidental disguise. It sounds like a help-desk NPC. The person behind it is apparently calibrating himself to whoever is in the room.
Mugs gets the family shorthand, not a ceremony
Dean and Mugen rarely need to announce what they are to each other because the relationship is already doing ordinary things in the background.
The pre-Raja mother/son bond gets drawn into UL's Tumbleweed because that is where the group's fake-family paperwork puts it. But the better scenes are smaller. Dean can turn to her with "mum" halfway through nonsense. Mugen can call him "My little deansprout uwu🌱". Years later she can tell her son to get a coconut because he is apparently climbing trees again, and he accepts the errand as if the household has established a tropical-produce division.
The "again" is especially good. Nobody stops to explain the prior tree history. Mugen assumes Dean knows the callback; Dean does. That is lived familiarity: one word carries enough old context that the joke can begin in the middle.
Mugen also sees a useful contradiction in him. Dean is not merely the affectionate kid who cheers Mum on. She explicitly puts him among the people who can tell her when she is making a bad decision. The online-family language therefore does not make him deferential. He can be sweet and still be corrective. Being "Mug's son" does not require pretending Mum is always right, which is probably for the best for everybody involved.
Cele is old-friend territory
Dean and Cele independently remember each other as an early first friend in Raja, and neither of them tells the story with dignified museum lighting.
Dean brings Cele up inside a deliberately fictional mafia-anime prompt and says he joined because of Mum, then that Cele was his first friend. He immediately contaminates the nostalgia with fake peril involving an unresolved Anna before assuring the room that both women love him now. A month later, under a completely different appreciation prompt, Cele independently tags Dean and detonates into "U WHERE MY FPRST FREN IN RAJAAAAA LOV U BESTIEWWWEEE".
That second recollection is what turns the first one from convenient anime lore into a real relationship memory. Dean remembers Cele as first-friend material; Cele remembers Dean the same way. The actual first meeting is still lost, but the emotional fact does not need a timestamp to be legible.
And the way they remember it matters. Neither person becomes solemn. Dean packages old affection inside a joke. Cele packages it inside typo-screaming. The memory can be ridiculous without being less affectionate; in fact, the ridiculousness is part of how comfortable the affection sounds.
The people were familiar before Discord was
Dean's first surviving UL Discord night is one of the cleaner glimpses of somebody entering a platform without entering a social world from scratch.
The Lobby bot welcomes him and Ren answers seven seconds later with "DEANNN". Dean replies "Hello my beautiful fam ✨". Then he gets into Club Only and immediately has practical questions: "Why are there so many people ;-;" and "Okay the emoji are different...".
The people recognize him. The software is the weird part.
Dean later explains why he downloaded Discord at all: classmates wanted to keep playing Among Us on weekends. His permission process is distilled to the immortal "my parents didn't say anything so I'm here now ☺️". He is walking into a giant server full of people he partly knows because weekend Among Us accidentally required infrastructure.
That first night is a useful little template for Dean in general. He can be socially warm while still openly figuring out the environment. Familiarity with people does not require pretending familiarity with the machinery. Years later he can still be the person hunting down unread notification dots because a "999" counter is offending him personally.
UL keeps breaking into his dreams
Dean has the recurring misfortune of being unable to make these people leave when he goes to sleep.
In early 2021 he reports elaborate UL dreams and Anthos immediately tries to turn one into "content creator for the underlords fanfics". Dean objects that it was a dream. Anthos answers "its potential 🤩", because apparently even unconscious nonsense needs a development pipeline.
It does not stop. In 2022 Dean complains that Gabu made him join a Roblox game with UL in a dream: "Y'all are haunting my dreams", followed by the platform grievance "First with DR / Now with fucking Roblox". A few weeks later UL is making him play hide-and-seek in another dream and Dean chooses a huge ass blender as the hiding place. His closing complaint is exactly what one would expect: "WHY DO I DREAM ABOUT YOU PEOPLE".
There is nothing mystical here. The joke is domestic. UL has apparently occupied enough mental square footage that Dean cannot reliably evict them at bedtime, and the room treats this recurring subconscious trespassing as one more form of content.
Beansprout can prosecute and be prosecuted
The account that looks like "✔️ Support Tech" is also the account Gilli interrogates with "WHOM IS BEANSPROUT" / "DEAN?", only for Dean to answer "YES" and "ME". Mugen later calls him "deansprout"; the nickname sticks much more convincingly than the accidental corporate-helpdesk aesthetic.
Dean also understands the Wall's purpose with alarming speed. He asks "Is this where you expose Peopl" and follows it with "Ehehehhehe", which is the exact sound of somebody discovering a weapon and immediately appreciating its design.
Naturally, this does not protect him when the weapon points back. His later protest is "WhY U expOse Me". Ren can spook him after he watches scary stuff. Woohyuk can report that Dean cracks him up. Gabu can call him "Dean bb". Mugen can roast the time he apparently saw purple and decided purple meant Wolfie. Dean is embedded enough that people do not need to set him up as a character before teasing him; they just invoke the local Dean file and continue.
That ease is probably the cleanest through-line in his later presence. He arrives already loved by some people, becomes legible to more of them, and never has to choose between being the quiet listener, the yapping friend, the sweet son, the person giving Mum a reality check, or the idiot being assigned coconut duty. He gets to be all of it.
Petty Crimes
- Discord entered his life because classmates wanted weekend Among Us and his parents apparently did not object loudly enough to stop the download.
- He has repeatedly accused UL of haunting his dreams. One dream placed him inside a huge blender. His subconscious needs better zoning laws.
- "Beansprout" / "Deansprout" is socially real. "✔️ Support Tech" is a display name, not a secret government appointment.
- He can become the designated listener around loud people and the designated yapper around quiet people.
- Mugen has apparently caught enough tree-climbing energy to say "again" before assigning coconut retrieval.
- A "999" unread-style counter once sent him hunting for red notification dots because leaving them there was unacceptable.
- He and Cele remember each other as first-friend territory in Raja, but Cele's version contains so many capital letters that the friendship itself may be legally classified as yelling.
